His father was Guru Teg Bahadur and his mother's name was Mata Gujari. CHILDHOODSince his childhood, Guru Gobind was fond of archery. His friends always regarded him as their leader. He had performed many miracles in his childhood. At the age of just three years, Gobind Singh had organised an army of small kids. They practiced the art of warfare amongst themselves.Impressed by his miracles, many people had become the followers of Gobind Singh. Once, a king named Shivdutt came to see Guru Gobind with his queen. The king was so impressed with Gobind Singh at the first meeting itself that, he began to come daily to have a sight of Guru Gobind Singh.Similarly, king Fateh Singh Maini and his queen too regarded Guru Gobind Singh as their own son. One day, Guru Gobind along with his friends visited their palace. There, he sat in the queen's lap. The queen ordered her servants to fetch sweetmeats at once. But Guru Gobind said that he would not eat the sweatmeats, but would eat 'puri' (puffed wheat dough, fried in oil) and halwa (a sweet) kept in the kitchen. Amazed by this act of Gobind, the queen heartily embraced Guru Gobind and lovingly fed him with puri and halwa.King Fateh Singh and his queen's affectionate for Gobind Singh grew so much that, when Guru Gobind Singh left Patna and shifted to Anandpur Sahib, they could not bear his seperation and fell unconscious. After getting the news from Patna, Guru Gobind visited the king and queen and assured them that he would appear before them whenever they remembered him. BHIKHAN SHAH FAKIR (CALENDER)In Patiala, there lived a fakir (calendar) called Bhikhan Shah. He possessed supernatural abilities of seeing through the past, present and future. One morning, he was meditating when he learnt about Guru Gobind Singh's birth. He immediately turned his face in the direction of Patna (east) and bowed down to offer 'SAJDA' (Islamic way of offering salutations to the Lord). His followers asked Bhikhan Shah, the reason for his act. He replied: "In that direction, 'Allah's Noor' (light of God) had appeared. I am bowing before it."After some days, Bhikhan Shah went to Patna to see the baby. He visited Guru Darbar, but Mata Gujari and Dadi (grand mother) Nanaki did not permit him to see the baby. The reason for this was that Guru Teg Bahadur had gone out for preaching and there was a threat from Aurangzeb, the Moghul emperor, as well. Mataji Gujari was suspicious that Bhikhan Shah had been sent by Aurangzeb to kill the baby. But due to his insistence, he got the opportunity to see the Guru.Bhikhan Shah had taken some sweetmeats with him. Guru Gobind Singh was one month old then. When Bhikhan Shah offered the sweets in two plates to Guru Gobind Singh, Gobind Singh touched both the plates with his hands. The people asked Bhikhan Shah about this amazing event. He wanted to know for whom did the Guru incarnate for, Hindus or Muslims. But, the Guru's greatness was proved after he touched both the plates implying that he regarded both religions as one and would protect the good and destroy the evil." Guru Gobind Singh's EDUCATION Guru Gobind Singh was a man of many qualities. He showed exemplary skills in arts and knew all the discourses. But still, he studied as per the educational system of that time. In Patna, Guru Gobind Singh learnt sanskrit and studied the sanskrit scriptures. He also learnt the art of warfare. Yet, his father made special arrangements for his son's education.Kaji Pir Mohammad, a famous Muslim scholar was appointed to teach Persian and Arabic to Gobind Singh , while a Pundit was appointed for teaching him Sanskrit. Guru Teg Bahadur taught Gobind the teachings of Guru Ghar himself. Similarly, arrangements were also made to educate Gobind Singh in various war techniques. RECEIVING OF GURU GADDIWhen a group of Kashmiri Pandits went to meet Guru Gobind Singh with the request of protecting the Hindu Dharma from Moghul suppresion, Guru Gobind asked for his father's help. He asked him:" What measure should be taken to protect one's Dharma?" Guru Teg Bahadur replied: "To protect one's Dharma, a noble soul's head should be sacrificed". Guru Gobind Singh replied: "Who but yourself is an example of a great soul! Hence, it would be appropriate if you could sacrifice your head at the altar for the protection of Dharma." This event shows the greatness of Guru Gobind Singh, who at a young age, sacrificed his father for the protection of another religion. After Guru Teg Bahadur went to Delhi and attained martyrdom, Guru Gobind received the Guru Gaddi at the age of nine. He felt that it was necessary to build an army to counter the onslaught of Moghuls. He encouraged his followers and made it compulsory for them to learn martial arts. THE DRUM NAMED RANJIT Guru Gobind Singh had a huge drum made and named it 'Ranjit'. It had a reverberating sound. Its beats had a pulsating effect on the hearts of the Sikhs. Gobind Singh was also trained in music apart from martial arts. MIRACLE OF Guru Gobind SinghAfter Guru Gobind Singh took charge of the Guru Gaddi, his prestige increased. Once, a Masand came from Peshawar. A rich man sent hundred gold coins and an expensive pair of embeded gold bangles including clothes and weapons through Masand.Masand delivered all the things to Guru Gobind Singh but hid the pairs of Kangans and one hundred gold coins in his turban. Guru Gobind Singh asked him: "Bhaiji, you are still having some more items due for Guru." The Masand got infuriated and said. "Transferring the Guru Gaddi to a boy is wrong as he cannot differentiate between good and bad. You would not have insulted an elderly person like me if you were not a young boy. Am I a thief?" Guru Gobind Singh replied: "Bhaiji, you are a thief as well as cunning". Saying this, Guru Gobind Singh took his stick and removed the turban from Masand's head and the pair of bracelets and one hundred coins fell from the turban. Masand at once fell at Guru Gobind Singh's feet and begged for his pardon. TALE OF A BEAROne day, a 'Kalandar' (a community in India whose profession was to rear bears and monkeys and hold shows for a living) came to Guru Gobind Singh with a bear. With the Guru Gobind Singh's permission, he made the bear dance before the people. Seeing the bear dance, the Guru's followers began to laugh. Even the Sikh, who was fanning with Guru Gobind Singh with a whisk began to laugh.Guru Gobind Singh said to that Sikh." Bhaiji, you're laughing at your father. This bear was your father in his previous birth".Hearing these words, the Sikh put the whisk aside in indignation and said, "If the fruits of serving you results in a low birth, of a bear, then, what is the use of serving you?" Guru Gobind Singh consoled the Sikh: "Bhai Gursikha, it is not my fault, but it is the nature of Sikhs that is at fault. One day your father was distributing the 'Kadah Prasad'. Just then, a cart-puller came there and begged your father to give some of the prasad as he was pulling the cart. But your father pushed him aside. The cart-puller was no ordinary man but a divine soul. He cursed your father that he would become a bear in his next birth. Thus, these words have come true as you see today. The bear (your father) has come here for seeking salvation." Uttering these words, Guru Gobind Singh fed the bear with prasad. The bear ate the prasad and died immediately and thus attained salvation. MARRIAGE OF GURU GOBIND SINGHGuru Gobind Singh married thrice.First Marriage : Jitoji, Bhikhe Shah's daughter was his first wife. She begot three sons. They were: Sahibjada Jujhar Singh, Sahibjada Joravar Singh and Sahibjada Fateh Singh.Second Marriage : Guru Gobind Singh's second wife was Mata Sundari, the daughter of one Rama Ratan from Lahore. She begot only one son named Sahibjada Ajit Singh.Third Marriage : The third wife of Guru Gobind Singh was Mata Sahib Deva, the daughter of a Kshatriya called Bhai Raami. He belonged to a town called Radutaas in Jhelum district of Kashmir province. She could not bear any child for Guru Gobind Singh. Guru Gobind Singh made her the religious head of Khalsa Panth along with himself. Even today, Sikhs regard Gobind Singh and Mata Sahib Deva as the 'Dharmic parents' of Sikh religion. Mata Sahib Deva lived with Guru Gobind Singh till his death. She even accompanied Guru Gobind Singh to Hajoor Sahib in Nanded. Even today, a Gurudwara named after her exists in Nanded. 'Langar' and 'Bhandara' (community suppers) are continuounsly held there. FOUNDING OF PAONTA SAHIB NAGARMedani Prakash (from the clan of Baidhaar kings), the king of Nahan, was a great devotee of Guru Gobind Singh. He invited Guru Gobind Singh to visit his kingdom in Nahan. One reason for his inviting Guru Gobind Singh was that he was the weakest of all the kings. His rival Fateh Chand had even occupied a major part of his kingdom.Accepting his invitation, Guru Gobind Singh, accompanied by 500 cavaliers, went to Nahan via Kiratpur. In Nahan, king Medani Prakash warmly welcomed him. When Fateh Chand learnt of Guru Gobind Singh's arrival in Nahan, he feared that Guru Gobind Singh had come to Medani Prakash's aid in getting back his territory. So, Fateh Chand went to meet Guru Gobind Singh with many gifts. Guru Gobind Singh mediated between the two. Medani Prakash got lost parts of his kingdom back. At the request of Medani Prakash, Guru Gobind Singh laid the foundation of Paonta Sahib in Nahan and built a beautiful city and a castle there. In Paonta Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh compiled the Jap Sahib, Savaiye and Vanis of Akal Ustat. BATTLE OF BhangaaniThe first battle in Guru Gobind Singh's life was the battle of Bhangaani. When Guru Gobind Singh was staying in Paonta Sahib, King Bhim Chand, accompanied by some other kings of hilly territories, attacked him. A fierce battle resulted, which was fought at a knoll between the rivers Yamuna and Giri. Guru Gobind Singh was helped in the battle by Pir Buddha Shah, his four sons, two brothers and an army of seven hundred troops. Guru Gobind Singh's aunt Bibi Viro also took part in the battle along with her five sons. Kripal Chand, the maternal uncle of Guru Gobind Singh, also participated in the battle. The two sons of Bibi Viroji, Sango Shah and Jitmal lost their lives in the battle. Pir Buddha Shah's son and brother also died in the battle. But ultimately, Guru Gobind Singh emerged victorious. King Hari Chand and three other kings were killed. THE FORT OF ANANDPUR SAHIBAfter the battle of Bhangaani, Guru Gobind Singh migrated to Anandpur Sahib and lived there for about seventeen years. There, he built many forts which were literally invincible. Anandgarh, Lohgarh, Toragarh etc. were some famous forts that Guru Gobind Singh got constructed in Anandpur Sahib. Apart from the forts, Guru Gobind Singh also established many factories for making arms and ammunitions. BATTLE OF NAADAUNThe battle of Bhangaani was a great loss for the kings of the hills. They had put everything at stake to defeat Guru Gobind Singh. But, their dream of defeating Guru Gobind Singh was shattered. The defeat had taken a huge toll on their coffers and, as a result, they could not pay the taxes that were due to the ruler of Delhi, Aurangzeb. Not receiving the taxes, Moghul emperor Aurangazeb sent a huge army under Alaf Khan to recover the taxes with fine from those kings. The kings then sought Guru Gobind Singh's help. Guru Gobind Singh heeded the saying in the Guru Vani:
JO SHARAN AVAI TIS KANTH LAVAI EH BIRAH SVAMI SANDA",
That is, whoever comes to your shelter, forgive him and protect him. Guru Gobind Singh sent a Sikh army to help the kings. The Sikh army fought a fierce battle with Alaf Khan's army. The Sikhs defeated the Moghul army and Alaf Khan escaped death.
THE BATTLE OF HUSSAININaadaun's battle was followed by the battle of Hussaini. The kings from the hills brought Hussain Khan for their help. But in this battle also, Guru Gobind Singh emerged victorious, and the kings from the hills had to face a shameful defeat. The battle of Hussaini was followed by the battle of Guleri in which Rustam Khan, the son of a Subedar (governor) also participated. In this battle also, Guru Gobind Singh was victorious. BIRTH OF KHALASA PANTH
GURU GOBIND HOE PRAGATIYODASVEN AVATARA JIH PANTH CHALAYO KHALASADHAR TEJ KARARA
On the day of Baisakhi in the year 1699, Guru Gobind Singh established the 'Panj Pyarey' (the five most beloved ones) at a place named Keshgarh and founded the Khalsa Panth. On the day of Baisakhi, the followers from far and near had gathered in Anandpur Sahib. Guru Gobind Singh had organised a Diwan (general assembly) and ordered the followers that he wanted five heads. "Is there anybody who can give me his head." The entire gathering was dumb founded. But true Sikhs know the ideology of the Guru. One by one, five Sikhs stood up. 1) Bhai Dayaram of Lahore was the first to present his head. He was a Kshatriya. Guru Gobind Singh took him inside his tent. After some time when Guru Gobind Singh returned, his dagger was smeared with blood. Blood was flowing out from the tent as well. 2) Bhai Dharm Chand of Hastinapur was the second to present his head. He was a Jaat. Guru Gobind Singh took him inside the tent. 3) Bhai Mohkam Chand, a 'Chhiba' by caste from Dwaraka, was the third to follow suit. 4) Bhai Himmat Rai, a 'Jhivar' by caste from Jagannath Puri was the fourth person. 5) Bhai Sahib Chand of 'Nai' (barber) caste from Bidarpur was the fifth to present his head. One by one, Guru Gobind Singh took those five Sikhs inside his tent. All the five Sikhs passed the test of bravery. At last, Guru Gobind Singh went inside the tent and brought back all the five Sikhs. Then, Guru Gobind Singh took water in an iron tumbler (baata) and began to stir it with his sword. At the same time, he was continously reciting the Panj Vanis. When Mata Sahib Deva learnt that Guru Gobind Singh was preparing the Amrit (ambrosia), she put some batashas (fluffy sugar candies) in the tumbler. While preparing the ambrosia, Guru Gobind Singhji recited first Japuji Sahib, then Jap Sahib, Savaiye, Chaupai and Anand Sahib in sequence. Then, he made those five Sikhs drink that preparation and renamed them as:
Bhai Daya Ram to Bhai Daya Singh
Bhai Dharm Chand to Bhai Dharm Singh
Bhai Mohkam Chand to Bhai Mohkam Singh
Bhai Himmat Ray to Bhai Himmat Singh
Bhai Sahib Chand to Bhai Sahib Singh
Thus, making them drink the Amrit, Guru Gobind Singh said: "This Amrit would instill enthusiasm in the Sikhs and its sweetness would propogate a feeling of brotherhood and kindness among them. He also said.
SAVA LAKH SIO EK LADAUNTABAI GOBIND SINGH NAM KAHAUN
Guru Gobind Singh lived by his words. Even today, a true Amritdhari Khalsa, who keeps Rahats (i.e. the five 'k's, a Sikh should keep with him), and recites Guruvani, is capable of defeating a huge army. After making the Panj Pyarey drink ambrosia, Guru Gobind Singh dictated Rahaten and Kurahaten (evils) to them.Keeping Kesh (hair), Kangha (comb), Kachahara (lower underwear), Kara(bracelet) and Kirpaan (dagger) is a must for a true Amritdhari Sikh.KESH (HAIR): Kesh (hair) has a supreme position in Sikhism. Every Sikh is instructed not to remove his hair or get clean-shaven because hairs are the identity of the Sikhs.Kangha (Comb): Among the five Rahats, one is comb. Guru Gobind Singh asked the Sikhs to always keep comb with them, so that when the need arises, an Amritdhari Sikh does not have to ask for it.Kachahara (lower under garment): As per the dictate of Guru Gobind Singh, lower undergarment is a must for Amritdhari Sikh. It is a guard of his honour also.Kara (Bracelet): The Sikh necessarily has to wear a bracelet round his wrist. Whenever a Sikh looks at his bracelet, he will remember God and would be reminded of his status as an Amritdhari.Kirpaan (Dagger): Dagger is also necessary for an Amritdhari Sikh. It is one of the five Rahats. It is supposed to be used in emergency, for self-defence and for defending others.Apart from the five Rahats that are necessary for the Sikh, there are four Kurahats (evils) too. A Sikh, who keeps five Rahats and abstains from the four Kurahats is a true Amritdhari. Only he deserves to be called as Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh has called an Amritdhari as Khalsa because he is free from impurity. These four Kurahats are:
Removal of hair from any part of the body or getting clean shaven.
Eating meat which has been prepared by the Islamic way (Halaal).
Consumption of tobacco, cigarettes, bidi or any other intoxicating items.
Carnal relation with a man or woman, other than husband or wife.
An Amritdhari Sikh must abstain from these four evils. In the words of Guru Gobind Singh:
KHALSA MERA ROOP HAI KHAS, KHALSA ME HAV KARU NIVAS
that is, one who follows these Rahats and abstains from the Kuruhats is a reflection of mine. Guru Gobind Singh had also told the Sikhs to follow a single 'Akaal Purakh' (the supreme Being); they should regard Guru Granth Sahib as their Guru and never regard any living human being as Guru. Every Sikh must bow before Guru Granth Sahib before commencing an important job. Study of Gurumukhi language is a must for every Sikh. Every Amritdhari Sikh must recite seven Vanis every morning and evening.VANIS FOR THE MORNINGJapuji Sahib, Jaap Sahib, Savaiye, Chaupai and the whole Anand Sahib must be recited in the morning during Amritvela.VANIS FOR THE EVENINGRahiras and Kirtan Sohila must be recited in the evening. Thus, the Sikhs drank ambrosia and got a new lease of life. Gobind Singh gave Sikhism a new name i.e. Khalsa in which boys use Singh and the girls use Kaur after their respective names. When the Panj Pyare had drunk the ambrosia, Guru Gobind Singh requested them to give him some ambrosia. The Punj Pyares asked Guru Gobind Singh that he had asked them to sacrifice their heads first before giving them the ambrosia and what would he present them for the same ambrosia. Guru Gobind Singh replied that he had sacrificed his father at nine years of age. "But to get the ambrosia, I present my Gaddi (Guru's seat), my four sons and my entire family.
